(Annual Dinner Meeting Minutes - September 21, 2002)

Minutes of Chapter 151 Meeting Held On September 21, 2002 at Royal Canadian Legion # 264 - Calgary, Alberta

 

The QWCA Wild Rose Chapter 151 meeting consisted of cocktails, dinner, annual meeting and a program, starting at 5:00 P.M. and finishing at 9:25 P.M.

1. The President of Chapter 151 Ken Oelke, VE6AFO called the meeting to order at 19:40 hours. All 31 members, Friends of QWCA and guests attending were welcomed and introduced.

2. Ken gave a brief history of Chapter 151 with the late Bill Savage, VE6EO and the Tyrrells starting the Chapter. Before Chapter 151 was organized, members travelled to Montana and met with the local Chapter there. Charles Tyrrell, VE6PV and Villa Jean Tyrrell, VE6VJ were responsible for introducing Ken to QWCA.

3. Chapter 151 folded last year and was reorganized by Ken Oelke, VE6AFO and Les Card, VE6CA and is now back to rebuilding and expanding. It is open to everyone wishing to become a full member who has been licensed for twenty- five years in amateur radio. This being with the National organization and the local Chapter. You can become a Friend of QCWA Chapter 151 if licensed less than twenty-five years in amateur radio. There are now five Friends in Chapter 151.

4. Using the computer has facilitated correspondence and contact with the members and more so since Chapter 151 created a web site.

5. QCWA National now has a Canadian leader since Croft Taylor, VE3CT became President on September 1, 2002.

6. Ken made sure that all members were given a membership list of members in QCWA National and Chapter 151. September 01 of each year has been set for renewal payment for our Chapter membership dues. He stressed the value and certain advantages of being a member of QCWA National and the local Chapter.

7. In remembrance of recent Silent Keys, the following names were read out.

8. Les Card, VE6CA read a letter from John Erickson, VE6ND of Lethbridge who is our oldest member at 93 years. Due to an accident he was unable to attend and sent his greetings.

9. Les Card, VE6CA gave the Treasurer's report. Income amounted to $1186.10 and expenses was $437.87, leaving a bank balance of $748.23. See separate Treasurer's report for complete details of receipts and disbursements.

10. Elections were called for President and Secretary/Treasurer. Ken Oelke, VE6AFO was nominated for President by Les Card, VE6CA and seconded by Barry Middlebrook, VE6TN. With no further nominations received, Ken was declared President. John Smith,VE6AI was nominated for Secretary/Treasurer by Les Card, VE6CA and seconded by Barry Middlebrook, VE6TN. With no further nominations received, John was declared Secretary/ Treasurer. Les Card, VE6CA will pass the books on to John Smith, VE6AI.

11. A Fifty/Fifty draw was made. John Smith, VE6AI won $21.50 and Chapter 151 made $21.50.

12. A list of earned certificates and other awards was read and presented to those who were in attendance. They are:

Earle Smith, VE6NM - 50 years

As well former Secretary Bruce Collisson, VE6BAC was awarded the coveted Meritorious Award. Congratulations to all!

13. Our guest speaker Eugene Lukan retired Colonel, Royal Canadian Air Force, was then introduced. The subject of his presentation was the Internationaal Space Station complete with pictures. He covered some problems involved in running the station, launching problems, especially the launch back and forth as required and, some of the maintenance difficulties. Predominate launching at present are the USA and Russian stations. However, Europe, Japan and other countries are trying to get launch facilities. The present cost to get cargo to space stations is $44,000 per kilogram for a round trip. The problems which have been encountered to set up the station in 2000 to 2002 and keep it operational, were also covered. What has been accomplished is phenomenal and the cost to do this is equally high.

14. Ken thanked our guest speaker and John Smith,VE6AI adjourned the meeting at 21:25 hours.
