Program - Presentation on Radon Gas
Ken Oelke, VE6AFO, had acquired a video on the topic of Radon, an odourless gas. He noted that this gas is highly radioactive, being a second cause of lung cancer after smoking. The equipment for monitor is expensive and not readily available. EPA has set the level of 4 picocuries/ltr of air in residential dwellings. In the USA, new construction methods are being used to prevent this gas from entering approximately 20% of the new homes being built. Irene Smith, VE6VN, mentioned in her years of being in the real-estate business that this topic has not presented itself in Calgary. She further noted that in her real-estate education this topic was a requirement. Fortunately, we are living in an area where this condition does not seem to exist.

APPENDIX A
QCWA Wild Rose Chapter 151
(President's Annual Report)
September 17, 2005
Again - 2005 was a very busy and productive year for QCWA Wild Rose Chapter 151. Our membership has steadily grown with both eligible members, licensed for at least 25 years, as well as friends of Chapter 151 who have been licensed for less than 25 years.
Over the past year our primary goal to sponsor amateur radio in schools has met further success. In cooperation with the RAC Youth Education Program and teacher Brian Jackson VE6JBJ, Chapter 151 has again brought amateur radio into another school. The school is Ralph McCall in Airdrie, AB in where Brian Jackson, VE6JBJ transferred to from Chestermere Lake Middle School this past summer. Adding further to our success - Bill Elliott, VE6AQY has donated a considerable amount of equipment to be put toward amateur radio in schools.
Our other goal to bring an (ISS) International Space Station contact to a school is nearing fruition. Three dates have now been selected - the week of November 21, 28 and December 05, 2005. The ISS contact was originally slated for the Chestermere Lake Middle School but - we are now taking this to the Ralph McCall School in Airdrie because of Brian Jackson's transfer. After all - he is the main spark plug in all of this. However - because the original application was with the Chestermere Lake Middle School, we will not be abandoning this school during this exciting event. We therefore will have one of their students involved in asking an astronaut on the ISS one of many questions. As well the entire scheduled contact will be available at the amateur radio station set-up at Chestermere Lake Middle School via an IRLP link.
Our bid to host a QCWA International Convention on 28th to 30th September, 2006, is drawing nearer. We are now at 375 days and counting down toward this being a reality. I again ask each and every one of you to please invite a friend to attend. No, they do not have to be licensed 25 years nor do they need to be a QCWA member. This is a convention for every one! Please spread the word for we are planning on having a great event and the more, the merrier!
As many of you already know - I have let my name stand for director on the QCWA International Board of Directors. Ballots will be mailed out to all Full QCWA Members in May 2006. Don't forget to vote for it is your way of letting QCWA know who you wish to have as your leaders in this great organization.
To close - I want to remind every one how important it is to get your Chapter and QCWA International membership renewals in as soon as possible. With your support we can continue with our primary goal of sponsoring yet more amateur radio in schools. Can you think of a better place than a school to expose amateur radio to young people? Remember when you got started? Remember the excitement and enthusiasm you had for amateur radio? Let us all help make this as exciting for young people as it was when you got started. After all - isn't this what we are all about in where the new has an opportunity to meet the seasoned? Let your enthusiasm show!
Sincerely,
Ken Oelke - VE6AFO
President
