QCWA WILD ROSE REPEATER

April, 2003

In the last newsletter I mentioned the lack of an Indian Summer. I can't help but think we Albertan's have been treated with some very unusual winter conditions. Getting double digit temperatures on the plus side in November and December more than made up for the much adorned Indian Summer that never materialized. However, come January things sure changed in a hurry. As I am writing this (March 5th) the weather is very cold and windy, along with blowing snow and temperatures hovering around -25c and colder!

Again, this is a brief newsletter to inform every one of QCWA Chapter 151 happenings. New memberships still roll in to the mailbox of Secretary/Treasurer John Smith, VE6AI. At this time we would like to welcome our 5 newest members who have joined since the last newsletter.

First, Jack Ambler, VE6CAQ, joins us from Calgary. Jack has been licensed since 1973. We also welcome our first new member from BC - Doug McGill, VE7GDM. Doug lives in Courtenay, BC and first licensed in 1965. Also sporting a VE7 call is new member Al McNeil, VE7BJA. Al was first licensed in 1958 and presently lives in Calgary working for Sprint Canada. And - we welcome back two former members of Chapter 151. In order of rejoining they are, QCWA Life Member Bruce Collisson, VE6BAC of St. Albert, AB and Harvey Milne, VE6JV, of Calgary. Bruce was former Secretary of the Chapter and first licensed in 1953. Harvey was first licensed in 1938.

As mentioned before - the website will always be a 'work in progress' and those who can and wish to contribute and or assist, will be most welcomed!

More pages have since been added and now include member profiles. I have received a few member profiles from Jack Ambler, VE6CAQ which will be posted as time permits. Thank you Jack for saving me the time to retype these member profiles.

QCWA WILD ROSE CHAPTER 151 NET

The QCWA Wild Rose Chapter 151 Net takes place every Monday evening on 3747 kHz at 7:00 pm MST or MDST once Spring arrives. At this time the Net requires people who would like to do Net Control duties, which I might mention is very informal, to help put the Net into action. The Net can be used for announcing meetings, other happenings, Silent Keys, news of sick or hospitalized Chapter members and or other Amateurs. If you are interested in becoming a Net Control station let the Chapter Executive know and we will provide you with a Net Preamble.

CHAPTER 151 QCWA JOURNAL REPORT

A Chapter 151 Report appears in the Spring 2003 QCWA Journal. If you have something you wish to see published in the QCWA National Journal - please feel free to submit your views and or pictures to your Chapter Executive for future submission. Submission deadlines are July 1, October 1, January 1 and April 1 of each year.

CALGARY CLUBS' FLEAMARKET - APRIL 26 - 2003

The next fleamarket to be held in Calgary is on April 26, 2003. QCWA Wild Rose Chapter 151 intends to have a booth set up to recruit new members and answer any questions pertaining to QCWA.

SO - HOW ABOUT THAT LETTER FROM QCWA NATIONAL PRESIDENT, CROFT TAYLOR - VE3CT?

To refresh your memories (yes, mine needs a kick start now and then!) I refer you to last month's newsletter in where QCWA National President Croft Taylor, VE3CT, wrote and asked if Chapter 151 would give some thought in us possibly hosting a QCWA National Convention. Rumour has it that QCWA National Capital Area (Chapter 70) is planning to host the 2004 convention in Ottawa, ON. There is also another cruise convention (the last one was very successful) in the planning for 2005. This time it will be an Alaskan Cruise.

To digress then, it will be Wild Rose Chapter 151's twentieth anniversay in May 2004. This puts our twenty-fifth anniverary into 2009. Many of our members will be more senior in another six years (including yours truly) and will likely care less about such activies like helping out to host a national convention. But - hopefully Chapter 151 will have attracted many new and younger members over the next six years who will be keen in putting Chapter 151 on the map by hosting a National convention. Think about it and don't forget - it will be the present members who will launch and give impetus and recruit new and younger members into the Chapter to carry out the future. We can not function by staying stagnant. We must grow in order to become a viable and a driving force to preserve the very nature of amateur radio! Recruit, recruit and, recruit!

Until next time...on behalf of the QCWA Chapter 151 Executive,

73

Ken Oelke, VE6AFO - President

John Smith, VE6AI - Secretary/Treasurer
