SPRING LUNCHEON MEETING - APRIL 26th, 2008

It is that time again to get together for fun and socializing at our spring luncheon meeting slated for April 26th, 2008.

This meeting we have a real treat for all of you, both in food and the program. First - the food (isn't that the reason we all get together?) a delicious deli meat sandwich bar with all the fixin's catered by non other then our own Linda-Lou, VE6LGO. For those who remember Linda-Lou's past organizing of food and fun, it is a most memorable mouth watering experience!

Now for the program. We have always worked hard to bring you the best in programming material for our meetings. This one is no exception but, it was not easy to get the University of Calgary engineering students to accommodate our schedule, especially with their term exams and all. However - luck was on our side and their exam schedule has skirted our meeting. The program? The University of Calgary Solar Powered Car.

The University of Calgary began building a solar powered car in 2004. Four years later they have become contenders in competitions world wide. During the Panasonic World Solar Challenge in Australia, the Team placed 8th in its class and was the first Canadian Team to cross the finish line. To be sure - you will not want to miss this exciting program. The fellows will be bringing their latest solar car (this is the second car they have built) to the meeting for show and tell.

THE MILITARY MUSEUMS (FORMERLY MUSEUM OF REGIMENTS)

After one year - the Morse code education program at The Military Museums is well and alive! This all began when Carolyn Foard, Manager, Education & Interpretation, gave a presentation at a meeting of the Calgary Communications Club on April 18, 2007.

Carolyn will be giving a brief update on this program at our upcoming Spring Luncheon Meeting slated for April 26th, 2008. See above for details.

As can be expected - more volunteers are still needed to demonstrate Morse code to students who tour The Military Museums. Since Chapter 151 is partnered with the Calgary Communications Club, the volunteer base can be drawn from two organizations. But don't let this fool you into thinking your help is not needed considering we can draw from two organizations. Not so!

Consider chipping in with your Morse code skills (no - you need not know how to send/receive at flying speeds) but to only show students the basics of Morse code and assist them while they take their hand at experiencing the thrill of sending a short message to one of their classmates.

Chapter 151 would like to acknowledge those who have thus far contributed to this program.

Walt Davis, VE6DA
Dwight Williams, VE6PK
Don Wilcox, VE6CG
Russ Wilson, VE6VK

We thank you for your time!

A package containing a camera, an APRS tracking device, and a VHF amateur radio was sent aloft on a weather balloon. A launch on August 11, 2007 from Sherwood Park travelled to a location north of Vegreville, and reached an altitude of 117,587 feet. Hundreds of photos (taken one per minute), showed excellent views at various altitudes. The photo taken at maximum altitude showed the curvature of the earth.
